Superb coromandel jewellery box by Rodrigues, Piccadilly.

A superb large Victorian coromandel jewellery box by Rodrigues,  42 Piccadilly, London. Veneered throughout in superb coromandel the edges have been banded in brass with further brass line inlays to accentuate the veneers to the top and front. To the centre of the lid is a large shield shaped brass cartouche. The sides retain the original flush fitting brass carry handles.

The box opens to reveal the original interior re-lined in a stylish blue cotton moire fabric, luxurious blue silk velvet and ivory silk. The inside of the lid has been further enhanced with gold thread embroidery.

To the front of the box a gilt brass button releases the fall-front revealing two drawers, both released by buttons at the back of the box inset into the makers gilt brass name plaque. Both drawers have been re-lined, the bottom laid out for jewellery, the top for larger items.

Beneath the bottom drawer what appears to be the base is actually a spring-loaded secret storage tray which when released flips over to reveal three compartments fitted for sovereigns, notes and important documents.

The box has been cleaned and professionally French polished and is in showroom condition.
